Interrupting the Staging of a Probable ICE Raid
This morning (Oct. 29), I helped halt the staging for what was almost certainly an ICE raid at the construction site where plenty of non-white workers are just doing their fucking jobs.
As soon as they realized they were caught, they yelled, “ Get back in your cars, hide your faces.”
Here’s the full story of what happened:
I pulled into the parking lot and noticed cars already there but too many to be my colleagues. Honestly, I thought it the cars belonged to guys working at the construction site even though they were told not to park there.
After I pulled into a spot and got out of my car, I saw one guy in full fatigues with “FBI” on his vest getting out of a Dodge Charger and a couple of other men exit other vehicles.
None were marked as law enforcement. No one had a uniform save the first guy in fatigues, but they also weren’t wearing masks.
My first thought was that something awful had happened, so I asked the FBI guy what was going on.
“Oh, well, we’re staging here.”
“Staging?”
“Yeah.”
That’s when other cars started arriving and more men piled out, all wearing masks, all wearing vests, some with “POLICE” and some with “URO” on them. The lightbulb went off.
“You can’t be here,” I said.
“We have permission from the District 2 supervisor,” Fatigues told me.
“I don’t care who you think gave you permission, this is where we do therapy and learning. You can’t be here. You need to go. Now.”
“Okay, okay,” Fatigues said, taking off his vest and putting it in the trunk of his car.
I was already taking pictures.
A colleague arrived, and I filled her in.
“Absolutely the fuck not,” she said, also pulling out her camera.
A couple more cars pulled into the parking lot and maybe one or two others exited their vehicles. All wearing masks.
“If you’re law enforcement, and you have permission, why are you wearing masks? Where’s you badge? What agency are you with?” my colleague and I shouted at them, taking photos the whole time.
Fatigues said, “Hey, we gotta go,” and made a round-up motion with his arm.
A woman got out of a minivan without her mask but put it on quickly. I have a photo of her with the mask on.
“Cover your faces! Get in your cars!” she shouted.
A few minutes later, they were all gone.
I flagged down an MPD officer who said, “Oh, yeah, they’re law enforcement.”
“They absolutely the fuck were not police,” I said. “Masks, no uniforms, no badges?”
“Yeah, well, they were staging.”
I snorted in disgust and walked away.
And that is what happened.
